Hand over Mumbai attack masterminds: PM to Pakistan

SHILLONG: Notwithstanding Islamabad's rejection of extraditing anyone to India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday asked Pakistan to hand over "criminals" responsible for Mumbai attacks so that they face trial in India. PM Manmohan Singh hoped that "some sense" would prevail on the leadership of Pakistan and it recognises that those behind the "horrible acts" in Mumbai have to be brought to justice. "It (Pakistan) has to take action on the demand from all civilised countries that the perpertrators (of Mumbai attacks) will be brought to book. We hope that these criminals will be handed over to us to face trial," he told a press conference after inaugurating the annual Indian Science Congress here. He also hoped that the new government in Bangladesh would not allow its territory to be used for terrorists acts against India especially in the North East. Asserting that government will never compromise with those using the gun, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said the government will go to any extent to root out terrorism from the country but was open to hold dialogue with those laying down arms. "The growing menace of terrorism and naxalism is a cause of worry. The government will not compromise with terrorism," PM Manmohan Singh said. "There were some initial setbacks, but we will overcome them. The government will go to any extent to root out terrorism from the country," Manmohan Singh said referring to the terrorist strikes in Mumbai, Delhi and Assam. Asked whether the Centre was open to talks with the banned ULFA, Singh said, "all insurgent groups must recognise that their only course open to them is to lay down arms. We will never compromise with those who believe in use of gun to get solution to their real or imaginary problems." He said insurgents and terrorists must recognise that gun is no solution to fulfil their demands. "Once they lay down arms as Indian citizens we are willing to talk to anybody," he said.

BSP MLA Tiwari chargesheeted

Lucknow, : The UP police on Saturday filed a chargesheet against BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari and nine other accused in the sensational killing of a PWD engineer in Auraiya. Ten accused, including BSP MLA Shekhar Tiwari have been chargesheeted in the (PWD engineer Manoj Gupta murder) case. Of the 10 accused, six including Tiwari have already been arrested," Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Vikram Singh told reporters here. All the main accused except Yogendra Dohore alias Bhatia, Hoshiyaar Singh, former station house office of Dibiyapur police station, and drivers Devendra and Santosh have been arrested. Gangsters Act and National Security Act have been slapped on the accused. "The police have already declared a reward of Rs 2,500 on Dohore alias Bhatia. Attachment procedures and reward announcement on Hoshiyaar Singh is being worked out. The background of every accused is being thoroughly investigated," said Singh. DGP Vikram Singh also disclosed that important forensic and documentary evidence had been recovered from the residence of murdered engineer Manoj Gupta. The DGP said the murder was a result of criminal conspiracy and connivance. Singh while chronologically narrating the happenings of the fateful day, divulged that among the vital evidence was the wire which was used to give electric shocks, the stick used for thrashing the victim fatally was also found, as was a blood-stained piece of cloth. Also all the four cars which were used to aid in the murder were recovered. The cop said that among the recovered vehicles were Honda city, Santro and Tavera. He added that one more car was also used. Tavera was the car which was used to carry the victim's body to the Dibiyapur police station where it was allegedly dumped. He cited that proceedings in the case were nearly complete as also that the role of suspicious people was under close scrutiny. While answering questions, Singh ruled out political conspiracy as the reason for the murder. Also when asked whether a narco test would be taken of the accused, he tactfully replied, “All our options are open.” Yet he said that the accused will have to be accountable while raising unanswered questions like why was Manoj not taken to a “big hospital?” The state police had claimed on Friday that accused Shekhar Tiwari had confessed to his crime. The MLA, known for his criminal antecedents, was arrested by the police in Rania area of Akbarpur police station of Kanpur Dehat district for his role in the murder of Executive Engineer M K Gupta of the Public Works Department of the Auraiya district who was done to death allegedly by the MLA and his two supporters over his refusal to give a "huge sum" for Chief Minister Mayawati's birthday celebrations in January. Autopsy later revealed that Gupta was subjected to electric shocks and brutally beaten up before dying of brain haemorrhage.

Israel continues assault on Gaza

GAZA CITY: Israeli warplanes continued to pound Gaza on Saturday as the assault on Hamas entered its second week, with the Islamist group's leader warning of a "black destiny" if ground troops are sent in. Hamas's Syrian-based chief Khaled Meshaal told Israel that "if you commit the stupidity of launching a ground offensive then a black destiny awaits you". "You will soon find out that Gaza is the wrath of God," Meshaal said in pre-taped remarks as the death toll rose from bombing and concerns grew about the humanitarian situation in the Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory. The United States gave Israel free rein on whether to invade the overcrowded enclave, insisting that the key to a ceasefire is Israel's demand for Hamas to permanently halt rocket fire. "So I think any steps they are taking, whether it's from the air or on the ground or anything of that nature, are part and parcel of the same operation," said White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe. "Those will be decisions made by the Israelis." President George Bush, meanwhile, urged all able parties to press Hamas to stop firing on Israel to facilitate a lasting ceasefire. "The United States is leading diplomatic efforts to achieve a meaningful ceasefire that is fully respected," Bush said in his weekly Saturday radio address, the text of which was released late on Friday. "I urge all parties to pressure Hamas to turn away from terror, and to support legitimate Palestinian leaders working for peace." Bush said Hamas was responsible for the latest violence and rejected a unilateral ceasefire that would allow Hamas to continue to fire on Israel. "This recent outburst of violence was instigated by Hamas - a Palestinian terrorist group supported by Iran and Syria that calls for Israel's destruction," Bush said. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert met with senior ministers as tanks and troops stood at the ready on the Gaza border. A missile fired by an Israeli jet slammed into a house in southern Gaza, killing three boys, aged from seven to 10. It was one of more than 58 fresh raids carried out on Friday. Since then, at least 435 people have been killed, including 66 children, and 2,150 wounded, according to Gaza medics. The bombardment has demolished dozens of houses and heightened concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where most of the 1.5 million residents depend on foreign aid.

3rd Test: Australia 155/4 at tea on Day 1

NEW DELHI: Opener Matthew Hayden struggled for his uncomfortable 31 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground as cautious Australia reached 155/4 at tea on Day 1 of the third Test against South Africa. Dale Steyn claimed Hayden after he had faced 78 balls. Australia got off to a good start, with opener Simon Katich and Hayden providing some resistance. But the quick dismissal of Katich and Ricky Ponting left the hosts reeling at 78/2 at lunch. Morkel sent Ponting back for a duck. Mike Hussey made 30 runs in 99 balls before being caught out by Kallis off Harris. Australia won the toss in overcast conditions and elected to bat first. Australia trail 2-0 in the three-match series and are desperate to claim this match to avoid a South African clean sweep. The Proteas can also take the top ranking from Australia if they win at Sydney.

Kareena's new address is in a building called ‘Queen’, and it will also have a new apartment for Babita. "Of course, my mother is moving with me. I can't live, breathe or even take one step without her. The only difference is she'll now have a separate apartment. But we're still on the same floor," Kareena said while talking to a news daily. Talking about her new address Bebo said, “It's just a hop and skip away from where she stays on Hill Road (Bandra) presently. I can't give up being close to my mom and living in Bandra." When asked about her marriage plans, and the home that Saif has been preparing for the two of them, Kareena shrugged, "That won't be ready for another two years. That's how long it's going to be before we get married anyway. Right now my diary is filled up till 2010. There's no space for even a runaway marriage." What we are wondering is – it would be really difficult for Saif to manage two difficult ladies after marriage – Kareena and mom-in-law Babita. We empathise with you, Chote Nawab!
